Beating the Odds is the story of Dr. Virginia Howard, an African American woman who is a pioneer in education. Virginia was born in the midst of the Great Depression when prospects were daunting. But she overcame every obstacle. She lived through the period of history when the rights of African Americans were horribly violated and the civil rights movement was forged. Virginia Howard beat the odds every time by circumventing the prevailing limitations and restrictions of the economic, social, political and cultural climate of the times in which she lived. Virginia Howard s story is one of hope. it inspires you to keep pressing forward even in the midst life s challenges and oppositions. Virginia obtained a college education when it was difficult for women, more so black women, to achieve. in 1956, she earned a Bachelor s Degree from Minor Teachers College, and went on to earn a Master s Degree and PhD from George Washington University.
