A cute story of non-discrimination for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th graders. Readers of 8-10 years old will find many fun scenes that explore what it might be like to walk on one s hands, while using one s feet and toes to write, pick up books, 'high-five', and climb. They crack their toes instead of their fingers and the teachers' glasses sit on the wrong side of their ears. Lonesome Sam walks right-side up and cannot stand on his hands. His teachers and classmates treat him as 'disabled' and are reluctant to change their rules until they come to realize during a school emergency that Sam has abilities that the others lack. The Handwalkers provides a fun way for young readers to start thinking about the difficulties kids with physical differences encounter and learn non-discrimination in an entertaining way. They learn that the biggest difficulty the 'differently-abled' face is the attitudes of others.
